We were excited to be invited to help ring in Matty Fields' 40th Birthday on Saturday, May 29th by taking part in two of the four legs of Mattypalooza! It takes a rare day and a rare breed to ski, ride, fish and kayak all in one day. Thanks to this year's wet spring, the snow coverage up Independence Pass is absolutely incredible. We met Matt, a long-time friend and local middle school teacher, along with his sister Nan for a lap on the pass. It was a crisp morning under long-awaited cobalt-blue skies. We arrived at the top of the pass shortly after 8am and it was clear we weren't the only ones with spring skiing on the mind. We skinned up toward Mountain Boy and chose a nice, buttery east-facing line down.

Next, it was off to ride mountain bikes

Skinning Tiehack, Aspen COStephanie makes her way up Tiehack on one of the heaviest AT setups known to mankind.

This winter, we've enjoyed a steady stream of snowstorms that have blessed us with more than our fair share of epic powder days! According to reports, the snowpack is somewhere around 125% of average and with the recent April snowstorms there's no indication that Old Man Winter will be relenting anytime soon. In fact, the SkiCo just announced that it will be extending the ski season and will reopen Aspen Mountain for two more weekends – April 26-27 and May 3-4 – unbelievable!

And with the sizable snowpack that will likely last well into May, we'll also be able to indulge in one of our favorite (and rapidly growing) winter activities – skinning! It's no secret that

In the middle of the 20th century, a good 50 years or so after the silver mining boom and subsequent bust that originally put Aspen on the map, Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke arrived on the scene to reinvent and re-imagine what Aspen might become. The Chicago industrialists, enamored with Aspen's natural splendors, envisioned a place where mind, body and spirit could be nurtured – the birth of what today is known as the "Aspen Idea."

In 1949, Paepcke's vision was realized in the first Goethe Bicentennial Festival – a celebration where scholars, philosophers and students gathered under the original amphitheater tent to pay homage to one of the greatest German writers and
